Tummy Time and Vision Development: Why Tummy Time Matters for Your Baby's Eyes

When most parents think about tummy time, they usually think about building neck strength. But did you know that tummy time also plays an important role in your baby’s visual development?

From the very beginning, babies learn by moving, looking, and interacting with the world around them. Tummy time brings all of these skills together.

How Tummy Time Helps Vision

During tummy time, babies naturally lift and turn their heads to look at faces, toys, and objects around them. These simple movements help strengthen the muscles needed for both head control and healthy visual development.

As your baby grows, tummy time helps support:

  • Visual tracking (following moving objects with their eyes).
  • Eye teaming (both eyes working together).
  • Depth perception.
  • Hand-eye coordination.
  • Attention and visual focus.

These skills become the building blocks for later milestones like reaching, crawling, reading, and writing.

Why Face-to-Face Interaction Matters

One of the best things you can do during tummy time is simply get down on the floor with your baby.

Your face is naturally one of the most interesting things they can look at. Talking, smiling, and making gentle expressions encourages your baby to focus, track, and engage while strengthening your bond.

In the early months, babies see best at about 8–12 inches away—the perfect distance when you’re lying face-to-face together.

Simple Ways to Make Tummy Time More Engaging

If your baby doesn’t love tummy time yet, that’s okay! Many newborns need time to adjust.

Try these simple tips:

  • Get down on their level and talk or sing.
  • Place high-contrast images or toys within their view.
  • Start with just a few minutes at a time and build gradually.
  • Use tummy time after naps or diaper changes when your baby is calm and alert.
  • Celebrate small successes—even a minute or two counts.

Remember: It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

Tummy time isn’t about hitting a certain number of minutes every day. It’s about giving your baby opportunities to explore, move, and connect.

Those little moments of looking at your face, following your smile, and discovering the world around them are helping build the foundation for lifelong learning.

At Sana Steps, we believe that some of the most meaningful developmental moments happen through simple, everyday connection.
